THE DESIGN BRIEF

Treat scratching as a resource to locate thoughtfully rather than a decoration to hide.

Explore the room

Map the relevant locations

Note where the cat rests, moves between areas and already scratches. Record the direction and surface involved without assuming a preference from one event. A scratching option hidden in an unused corner may satisfy a human floor plan while remaining poorly connected to the cat's daily routes.

Cats Protection recommends sturdy scratching provision and highlights the usefulness of relevant locations such as those near resting spots. Use that principle to choose a place, then check the dimensions and assembly instructions of the actual product.

Fit the object to the room

  • Measure the available space with doors and drawers in their ordinary positions.
  • Allow room for approach and appropriate use of the scratching surface.
  • Follow the manufacturer's stability and installation directions.
  • Avoid turning the new object into a bottleneck on the route to another resource.

Give the cat a voluntary introduction

Let the cat investigate and record spontaneous use. Do not move its paws along the material or insist that the new surface be used immediately. If the arrangement is ignored, review placement and the observed kind of scratching before assuming a different decorative style will solve the question.

Keep notes of what changed. Moving a post, changing its surface and changing the room at once leaves you with little evidence about any one factor. A simple diagram helps preserve the original arrangement.

Maintain the resource, not just the appearance

Inspect the object and fixings according to the instructions. Check surrounding clearance after furniture is moved. A scratching option that is gradually buried behind storage is no longer the same accessible arrangement.

This guide does not promise to prevent damage to furnishings or treat a behaviour issue. It provides a planning method for offering an appropriate resource as part of the home, with room for the individual cat's choices.
